- W2032425101 abstract "Abstract The fluorescence of several dissolved organic molecules has been measured as a function of the solvent (using liquid hydrocarbons and alcohols) and the temperature (100–350°K). The absolute fluorescence emission spectra, fluorescence quantum yields, and action spectra for the excitation of the fluorescence have been determined. A table of yields is presented, as well as a few spectra for compounds of biological interest. When combined with lifetime measurements made elsewhere, the results indicate that nonradiative transitions are often more sensitive to changes of solvent and temperature than the spontaneous emission. The rates of these transitions appear to depend on the solvent polarizability and dipole moment, in some cases (1) via the formation of specific complexes, and in other cases (2) via the average van der Waals interaction. It also appears that transitions are induced thermally by both (1) excitation of lattice motion, when it is strongly coupled to the molecule by dipole-dipole or hydrogen-bonding interaction, and (2) excitation of active vibrations within the fluorescent molecule itself." @default.
