- W2032461566 abstract "This study investigates change in the inventory and use of passive constructions in Standard Thai from 1802 to 1982. The analysis, which is based on approximately 3500 pages of sampled prose writing, confirms the hypothesis that there has been an increase in the use of passive constructions during the Bangkok period (1782–present). Nine types of passive were found to emerge at different points in time. Only two types are present in the earliest samples. Moreover, the data show that passive constructions were used more frequently in fiction translated from English than indigenous fiction and in academic writing than newspaper editorials. Both of these findings support the often-asserted claim that the influence of English has been an important factor in the increased use of passives. A view of the socio-cultural setting of the changes provides an explanation of how contact with the English language could have caused the change in the frequency of passive constructions and what factors might have contributed to its fluctuation. It was found that several remarkable peaks of incidence of passive constructions are related to significant changes in Thai society resulting from the Westernization of the country." @default.
