- W2032468368 abstract "by Eduardo E. Benarroch, Futura Publishing Company, Inc., 1997. $125.00 (ix + 697 pages) ISBN 0 87993 673 8Detailed reviews on all aspects of autonomic function are few and only recently has a series of texts[1xSee all References[1], edited by Geoffrey Burnstock, been published by Harwood Press, and further volumes are planned. In contrast, Benarroch's text is unusual in that it is a genuine monograph by a single author of detailed information on the central organization of autonomic control across the whole range of its effects. It is comprehensive in dealing with both the breadth of the basic scientific literature and the extensive clinical information that is available currently. It is very much an attempt to cover the human autonomic field but often, especially in regard to the basic physiological mechanisms underlying autonomic function, has to consider other animals. It certainly provides an exhaustive if rather staccato summary of much of the current literature. What is gained by its breadth – the author is to be congratulated on his broad sweep through the literature – is lost by the lack of novelty for the specialist. He summarizes rather well the material that is presented in Loewy and Spyer ([2xLoewy, A.D and Spyer, K.M. See all References[2]) and Bannister and Matthias ([3xBannister, R and Mathias, C.J. See all References[3]), which are multi-authored although highly edited texts. The text by Benarroch has a very didactic approach, an aspect that will appeal to the busy clinician seeking information, and for graduate students also, although not to the most inquiring. It does not have the quality of scholarship, or eccentricity that is so endearing in Blessing's recent monograph[4xBlessing, W.N. See all References[4]that involves both anatomical insight and intellectual curiosity. In other words, this text does not have a strong conceptual motive but is a summary of a large body of data from widely dispersed sources.Benarroch clearly seeks a wide audience but with a final section dealing with clinical management there can be little doubt that the market for this book is going to be the intern or the senior clinician in an allied field who has a puzzling patient. They will be helped by the chapter on modern neuroscience techniques and experimental strategies that is given in the first chapter and the summaries that accompany each chapter. In my opinion, the book will not be attractive to the neuroscientist who is working in the autonomic field and the graduate student will be frightened by the price. They will be more satisfied by expert reviews in more limited aspects of autonomic function. It might, however, be attractive to faculty preparing lectures for the new medical curriculum that will emphasize the interface between basic and clinical science and clinical practise." @default.
