In this review we propose and defend the hypothesis that, “The activity of hepatic HMGR is critically regulated by the fluidity of its supporting microsomal membrane”. Alterations to the activity of membrane-bound enzymes by alterations to membrane fluidity are well known, but only as experimental manipulations.
