• W203307584 abstract "Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is coreleased with the classical transmitter noradrenaline in both the peripheral and central nervous systems, and has been shown to potentiate the pressor effects of noradrenaline. In mammals NPY is released into the circulation in response to intense sympathetic stimulation, and it maintains blood pressure in the face of hemorrhage. Despite the abundance of NPY in nerves supplying blood vessels and the heart, it has been difficult to discern the extent of involvement of this peptide transmitter in minute-to-minute blood pressure control. Vasoconstrictor actions of NPY across a number of vascular beds are likely linked to Y1 receptor activation; the magnitude of these effects is specific to the particular bed under examination. There is some evidence that raised plasma NPY levels are associated with hypertension, and increased cardiac NPY release is a hallmark of heart failure. NPY is a constrictor of coronary vessels and has been implicated in the development of atherosclerosis and in angiogenesis; these effects of NPY warrant further investigation. Neurons containing NPY also participate in central cardiovascular control. While it is difficult to judge the precise role of central NPY in cardiovascular regulation, in the brain NPY exerts depressor effects and modulates baroreceptor function. NPY released in states of sympathoexitation such as heart failure and panic disorder may contribute to the cardiovascular consequences of these conditions." @default.
