- W2033137587 abstract "There are many products for which network externalities are important, and whilst the concept has been examined at the theoretical level, there has been little systematic empirical analysis. This paper seeks to provide an insight into some of the details of network externalities in the packaged PC software market. We use the ordered probit approach to analyze the responses of computer users to a questionnaire about their attitudes to software standards. We find that the network externalities accruing to any given software package are derived from a number of different sources (add-ons, books, training courses and so forth). Similarly, we find that a variety of information sources are consulted by users when making future purchase decisions. Further, the relative importance of the sources of network externalities, or of information, varies across different types of user. Our results suggest a wide degree of diversity of consumer tastes in the packaged PC software market. This diversity illustrates how, in many markets, multiple standards equilibria may arise." @default.
