- W2033449260 abstract "An Israeli collection of the rare lichen Gonohymenia mesopotamica J. Stein. is reported and described. On July 13, 1966, I collected Gonohymenia mesapotamnica J. Stein. (Fig. 1-2) from an exposed, flat shelf of basalt rocks in Korazim, Israel. The station is five kilometers north of the Sea of Galilee and about 100 meters above sea level (i.e., 300 meters above the Sea of Galilee). An area of Mediterranean hemicryptophytic semisteppe with igneous rocks, mostly volcanic. The annual average precipitation is 500 millimeters, restricted to 40-45 days during winter months. The annual average temperature is 21'C (average temperature in midsummer 2S?C, in midwinter 12'C). Gonohymenia mesopotamica has been reported only once. Steiner (1921) described the specimen collected by H. F. von Handel-Mazzetti in 1910 from a basalt rock in Mesopotamia near Dschesiret-ibd-Omar at 400 meters. Only five species belong to the genus Gonohymenia. Lange (1958) studied them and suggested that they be divided into three groups with G. mesopotamica as the only representative of the third group. Gonohymenia mesopotamica differs from the others by a more differentiated thallus and by a peculiar stroma-like structure of the fruiting body. Each apothecium is composed of several hymenia separated by sterile regions of algal cells and thalline hyphae (Fig. 3-4). Servit (1931) named the new, supposedly monotypic genus Rechingeria to accommodate R. cribellifera (Nyl.) Serv. [Omphalaria cribellifera Nyl. Thyrea cribellifera (Nyl.) Zahlbr.] and also described the new variety R. cribellifera var. kastrensis Serv. for Rechinger's collection from Lemnos in the Aegean. From Servit's description and drawings it may be assumed that he actually dealt with Gonohymenia mesopotamica. Lange (1958) has already pointed out a relationship between G. mesopotamica and Thyrea cribellifera. The description of the present collection follows: Thallus externally resembling a Collema, black when dry, turgescent and olive-brown when wet, squamulose, affixed to the substrate by hyphal strands, the squamules ? erect, 2.5-3 mm high and 1.5-2.5 mm broad, rotund or flat, irregularly plicate, the tips usually broadened to form a ? flattened surface. Algae xanthocapsoid, densely and ? perpendicularly aggregated along the periphery of the squamules, gradually dispersing toward the center but absent in the central medulla, algal cells usually in pairs or in groups of 4, imbedded in a gelatinous sheet 2-3/t thick, yellow near the outermost cells and colorless near the inner cells, the algal cells yellow with a faint pinkish tinge, each cell penetrated by a hyphal haustorium. Medullary hyphae 0.8-1~u thick, hyaline, anastomose, loose 1 This study, part of the general investigation of the lichen flora of Israel, was supported by a grant of the Israel National Academy of Science.
