- W2033490264 abstract "Summary At present in the UK, growth hormone is licensed for the treatment of short stature caused by impaired growth hormone secretion, Turner's syndrome, renal failure and for hormone replacement in adults known to be growth hormone-deficient. It is clear that there are significant benefits of treatment on the final heights of children with growth hormone deficiency. In contrast, the benefits of therapy on the final height of children with Turner's syndrome may not be as great as were originally anticipated. The optimum method of increasing final height in both Turner's syndrome and renal failure is yet to be established and, if such children are treated long-term, the value of continued growth hormone in individual cases requires constant realistic re-evaluation. Although growth hormone has been shown to accelerate the short-term growth of children with a variety of other causes of short stature, the widespread and idiosyncratic use of growth hormone cannot be justified in these other groups until the benefits of therapy on final height have been demonstrated by carefully conducted research studies involving comparisons with suitably randomized, untreated control groups." @default.
