- W2033520281 abstract "Classification of graphite occurrences according to the physical conditions of formation may clarify the current discussion on the presence of graphite in extraterrestrial environments. By definition, primary graphite forms by vapor to solid transformations while secondary graphite (Type I) is the result of thermal annealing of graphitizable amorphous carbon. Interaction of energetic particles, or radiation, with small-sized amorphous carbon particles may produce secondary graphite (Type II) in the interstellar medium. Primary graphite and secondary graphite (Type II) may show a different grain size distribution. Secondary graphite (Type I) is probably associated with highly ordered poorly graphitized carbon which may distinguish this type of graphite from the other two types. Using graphite formation conditions, it is concluded that primary and secondary graphite (Type I) are unlikely constituents of interstellar dust but that secondary graphite (Type II) (∼1.0 μm in diameter) may be present. However, a lack of surface energy data for amorphous carbon precludes a quantitative analysis of secondary graphite (Type II) formation." @default.
