- W2033637701 abstract "An alternative option for disposal of turkey manure is to use it as fuel for power plants to generate energy. The resulting turkey manure ash (TMA) could be used as a nutrient source for crop production. This study compared TMA with commercial fertilizers as nutrient sources for corn (Zea mays) and soybean (Glycine max) at two locations in Minnesota over two years. The pH of both soils was acidic with P and K concentrations ranging from medium-high to very high. Over the two years, annual and biennial P rates applied with TMA were 70.8 and 100 lbs of P2O5 per acre, and with fertilizer the rate was 100 lbs of P2O5 per acre. Annual and biennial K rates applied with TMA were 99 and 140 lbs K2O per acre, and with fertilizer the rate was 140 lbs K2O per acre. In addition, a control (N only for corn) was added. Corn and soybean yields were similar with TMA and fertilizer. For soybean in 2005, biennial application of fertilizer and in 2006 annual application of TMA resulted in higher yields than the non-fertilized control. No corn yield response to P and K application was found regardless of source. Copper in corn tissue with annual application (TMA and fertilizer) was lower than in the control. Copper concentrations in soybean tissue with TMA were comparable to those in the control and higher than those with fertilizer. Turkey manure ash increased soil Cu and Na; however, this increase was not at levels that would prove deleterious to plants. In conclusion, TMA was shown to be a potential nutrient source for corn and soybean production in Minnesota." @default.
