- W2033667207 abstract "What is international history? Is it comparative history, recast? Or does international mean transnational, befitting an era of crossed borders and declining national sovereignty? The most persuasive international histories straddle both camps, recognizing that to do international history means above all to think transnationally and comparatively, as historical subjects often have. As Robert Trent Vinson suggests in this economical and elegant monograph, although bodies are bounded by time and space, minds frequently transcend such limits. Vinson's study is a history of the political imagination in South Africa, from the late nineteenth through the mid-twentieth century. He demonstrates that even as white settlers enacted segregationist legislation and bound the region's fractious polities into a new nation, black “South Africans” generated ideas about political liberation that extended well beyond the country's frontiers. Nowhere was this more evident than in the decades' long engagement between black South Africans and African Americans (a capacious category, including West Indians and Zulu speakers like Wellington Buthelezi, who affected American accents and cultivated the idea of American-ness to their own ends). This is a book about journeys from the North to the South Atlantic, and back again: from the South African tour of the Virginia Jubilee Singers in the late nineteenth century, through the travels of African American and West Indian seamen to Cape Town during the early twentieth century, from pilgrimages to Booker T. Washington's Tuskegee, to the promise of Marcus Garvey's Black Star line. Vinson demonstrates that when black South Africans talked about liberation, they often had the example of black America in mind." @default.
