- W2033840982 abstract "HE EFFICIENT transport of urine from the kidney to the bladder is dependent on ureteral function. Under normal conditions, peristaltic activity begins with the origin of electrical impulses from pacemaker sites lo cated in the proximal portion of the collecting system. 1 - 6 The exact sites of this pacemaker activity varies with the species. 3 The electrical activity is then propagated distally at a rate of 2-6 cm/sec 7 ,s and gives rise to peristaltic con traction waves which occur at a frequency of 2-6 times per minute 9 and propel the urine bolus from the kidney to the bladder. Efficient propulsion of the urinary bolus is dependent on complete coaption of the ureteral walls. 10 Rest ing or baseline ureteral pressure is approxi mately 0-5 cm water and peristaltic contrac tions waves of 20-60 cm water are superim posed on this baseline pressure. 9 Urine passes into the bladder via the ureterovesical junction which under normal conditions permits urine to pass from the ureter to the bladder but not from the bladder to the ureter. The efficient trans port of urine into the bladder is dependent on the maintenance of relatively low intravesical pressures during the phase of urine storage. If intravesical pressure becomes inordinately high, transport of urine across the ureterovesi cal junction becomes inefficient and hy droureteronephrosis results." @default.
