- W2034102047 abstract "Telomere length, which shortens with each cell division, varies by individual and may partly explain differences in reproductive aging rates. We examined whether leukocyte telomere length (LTL) was associated with menopausal age. Cross-sectional study using data collected for a prospective cohort study. We evaluated the relationship between LTL and menopausal age in 502 women aged 65 or older from the Cardiovascular Health Study. We excluded subjects with cognitive impairment and, except for comparison purposes, women reporting surgical menopause. We fit linear regression models adjusted for age, income, education, race, BMI, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol intake. In separate sensitivity analyses, we refit the regression model a) also excluding women with unilateral oophorectomy, b) also adjusting for diet, and c) in women with surgical menopause only. The mean age at blood draw was 74.8 years (range: 68-95), mean age at menopause 48.5 years (range: 15-64), and mean LTL 6.4 kilobase (kb) pairs (range: 4.8-8.4). For every 1 kb increase in LTL, average age at menopause was 9.3 months greater [95% confidence interval (CI) -0.9, 19.5]. Excluding women with unilateral oophorectomy slightly strengthened this difference (10.4 months; CI 0.6, 20); results did not change when adjusting for diet. There was no association between LTL and age at menopause in women who had surgical menopause (0.0 months; CI -19, 19). Women with the longest LTL underwent menopause approximately 2.8 years later than those with the shortest LTL. If artifactual, an association would likely also have been observed in women with surgical menopause. The association may indicate that slower cellular aging increases women's reproductive lifespan. Or, it may reflect confounding by an influence common to both cellular aging and age at menopause." @default.
