- W2034102404 abstract "Studies relating the behaviour of coals in direct liquefaction to compositional properties are reviewed. No one single property adequately predicts conversions for all coals but correlations with sulphur, reactive maceral and volatile matter contents, vitrinite reflectance and H/C ratios have been established for coals from particular geological regions. At short residence times, bituminous coals give higher conversions than lower rank coals but, under typical hydroliquefaction processing conditions, distillate yields are often higher from lower rank coals. Lack of information on the nature of aromatic, aliphatic and heteroatomic groups and on the concentrations of low molecular weight constituents in coals has prevented more precise structural correlations with liquefaction behaviour being established. Analytical results from techniques that show potential to improve our understanding of the way organic coal structure affects liquefaction are assessed." @default.
