- W2034107007 abstract "Significance The airway pathogen Mycoplasma pneumoniae ( Mp ) produces a virulence factor with ADP-ribosyltransferase and vacuolating activities known as Community-Acquired Respiratory Distress Syndrome Toxin (CARDS TX). Mammalian cells exposed to recombinant CARDS TX exhibit distinct patterns of ADP-ribosylated proteins and unusual vacuolation phenotypes with disruption of monolayer integrity, leading to cell death. Recombinant CARDS TX administered to naive mice induces an allergic-type inflammatory response and airway hyperreactivity, suggesting that an analogous response in humans may play a causal role in Mp -associated asthma. Here we present the structure of CARDS TX, the newest member of the well-recognized group of ADP-ribosylating toxins. The structure enhances understanding of Mp pathogenicity and provides a platform for the development of therapies to treat Mp -associated acute and chronic airway diseases." @default.
