The fine structure of the venom system from insects after periods of starvation is described and compared with that from newly emerged or actively feeding adult female parasitoids. Starvation markedly affected the structure of all the organelles in the columnar secretory cells of the acid gland. The nuclei were reduced in volume and indented. The shape and distribution of the nucleoli varied, and the chromatin was condensed into adielectronic masses. Large whorl-like sheets of endoplasmic reticulum appeared, and the Golgi complexes lost their lamellate form. Groups of dielectronic bodies were formed probably from mitochondrial/cytoplasmic complexes. Marked changes also took place in the vesicular organelles of the cells. The secretory epithelium of the reservoir showed fewer ultrastructural changes during nutritional variations, and the chitogenous, muscular, and supporting cells were almost unaffected." @default.
