- W2034121161 abstract "Twitch potentiation was studied in triceps surae(TS) and triceps brachii(TB) following 10s of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) in 10 triathletes(TRI), 10 distance runners(RUN), 10 active controls (AC), and 10 sedentary controls (SED). Twitch was evoked before, immediately after(within 5s), and 60s following MVC. Absolute and relative potentiation(PT*) were determined by comparing the resting twitch (PT) to that obtained after MVC. TRI, RUN and AC had 61.6%, 34.8%, and 40.1% greater maximal plantar flexion strength than SED(p<0.01). Resting twitch measurements of the TS indicated that TRI and RUN had 42.8% and 31.2% greater PT than SED(p<0.01), 17.1% and 15.1% shorter time to peak torque(TPT, p<0.001) and 19.6% and 13.6% shorter half relaxation(RT 1/2, p<0.01) than SED (p<0.01). Furthermore, TRI at 5s and 60s and RUN at 60s had greater relative PT* than SED(TRI vs. SED, 49% vs. 27.9% for 5s, p<0.01, 24.5% vs. 11.9% for 60s, p<0.05 and RUN vs. SED, 27.0% vs. 11.9%, p<0.05). TRI and AC had 34.9%, and 42.6% greater elbow extension strength than SED(p<0.01). TRI had 46.5% greater PT (p<0.05), and 32.2% longer RT1/2 of TB than SED(p<0.01). There were also differences in absolute PT* at 5s between TRI and SED(4.7 vs. 2.6Nm, p<0.01) but not in relative PT*. There were no differences in voluntary strength, resting twitch parameters, or the magnitude of PT* between RUN and SED. These differences in upper and lower limb muscles between groups may reflect training specificity." @default.
