- W203412718 abstract "Publisher Summary Inhalation of tobacco smoke results in a large intake of long- and short-lived free radicals. This sustained oxidative burden incurred by smokers results in elevated indices of free radical-mediated damage to lipids and DNA, and decreased blood and tissue concentrations of some antioxidant nutrients, such as vitamin E, vitamin C, and certain carotenoids. Increased intakes of these antioxidants by supplementation can moderate indices of oxidative stress in smokers, although it is not clear whether the risk of developing smoking-related diseases is also decreased. Although some evidence exists to suggest that variation in dietary intakes of natural plant-based antioxidants may explain the lack of association between smoking and disease on a cross-country basis, it is still a very good idea to stop smoking, particularly because within countries, smokers have an increased incidence of disease. The aims of this chapter are to review how smoking challenges the antioxidant defense system, and to discuss whether increased intakes of natural antioxidants can influence smoking-induced oxidative stress and disease morbidity." @default.
