- W2034131878 abstract "The absence of dietary phosphatidylcholine (PC) in a purified diet fed to juvenile lobsters Homarus sp. is associated with a significant reduction in serum cholesterol titers throughout most of the molt cycle. The reduction in circulating cholesterol has no apparent effect upon ecdysteroid (molting hormone) titers even during proecdysis when these hormone levels increase dramatically. The bulk of dietary cholesterol is absorbed and digested within 8–12 h after ingestion. Transport rates of [3H]cholesterol out of the midgut gland and into the hemolymph are reduced in the absence of dietary PC. Changes in the specific activity of serum cholesterol over time conform well to a model based upon differential transport rates. The hemolymph lipid of juvenile lobsters is predominantly phospholipid and PC comprises > 60%. Most of the serum cholesterol is associated with equilibrium density gradient fractions that contain the serum lipoproteins. These observations suggest that cholesterol transport is associated with hemolymph lipoproteins that have phospholipids as their principal lipid component." @default.
