- W2034142497 abstract "Abstract The evolution of an invention is often characterized by gradual accumulation of the best ideas. Gain analysis consists of formulating heuristic rules that underlie evolutionary changes in an invention and then coordinating these rules with possible psychological processes. We examine a simple hand tool, the sewing needle, that serves as a prototype of invention and its development, dating to Stone Age times. We also conduct a gain analysis experiment using different historical sewing implements and modes of sewing. The results show some of the probable gain factors underlying the evolution of the needle and sewing. These factors include the development of progressively better interfaces between needle and thread and the corresponding movement from discrete to continuous sewing. In combination, these factors serve to minimize psychological switching processes. To validate the generality of gain heuristics and underlying switching processes abstracted from the study of the needle, we then examine another invention, the assembly line, and show similar heuristics and switching processes at work." @default.
