Elle cherche trop souvent à faire des asthmatiques conformes au type idéal d'asthmatique qu'impliquent nos connaissances qui ne sont que consensuelles, et pas assez à donner au malade les moyens de son autonomie et de ses choix. Objectifs communs, discours cohérents, procédures coordonnées dans la prise en charge de l'asthmatique, relèvent de la responsabilité des soignants, et on est loin du compte aujourd'hui ; peut-être faudrait-il parler maintenant de l'éducation des soignants ! The patient's cooperation and personal management are the cornerstone of treatment of all long-term diseases, especially those which can be associated with sudden deterioration. The management of asthma has two objectives: to maintain an intercritical respiratory state as normal as possible; to reduce the severity of acute attacks. Methods designed to achieve these objectives have been extensively described in the international literature. Education plays an essential role and confers a double function to the physician: — mediator, who helps the patients to convert perception of a symptom into a practical approach, — educator, who teaches the patient to perform this conversion himself, and to draw useful conclusions. Education is essential, but must also be carefully thought out. All too often, it tries to make asthmatics comply with an ideal type of asthmatic based on our knowledge which is not purely consensual, without providing the patient with ways of achievinghis autonomy and choice. Objective commons, coherent language, coordinated procedures in the management of asthmatic patients are the responsibility of health professionnals, and we are a long way from this objective at the present time; perhaps we should really be talking about education of health professionals!" @default.
