- W2034175752 abstract "A survey was conducted in 1992 on inpatients of the University Hospital of Tours, France to determine the prevalence of infections and antibiotic use. This point prevalence survey was carried out on all hospitalized patients, excluding those on the psychiatry and short-stay wards. Medical pertinent records were reviewed for each patient; 1,216 patients were studied. Overall, 298 (24.5 %) patients had infection in 1992. Community-acquired and hospital-acquired infections were present in 193 (15.9 %) and 113 (9.3 %) of the patients, respectively. Eight patients had simultaneously a nosocomial and a community-acquired infection. The prevalence of nosocomial infections was 11.2 %. The highest prevalence rate of hospital-acquired infections was found in Intensive Care Units of surgery (58.2 %) and of medicine (20.3 %). The most common sites of hospital-acquired infection were the lower respiratory tract (20 %), urinary tract (17 %), surgical wound (15 %) and intravenous catheter (6.6 %). 209 patients had a urinary catheter at the time of the survey and 19 (9 %) were infected. A microbiological diagnosis was available in 89 % of those infections. The most frequent micro-organism was Escherichia coli (17.4 %), followed by Staphylococcus aureus (14.5 %) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (11.6 %). Antimicrobial agents were being administered to almost one third of patients, in this study. Among them, 33.9 % were receiving the drugs for prophylactic reasons. The most frequently used antibiotics were amoxicillin combined with a beta-lactamase inhibitor (14 %), quinolones (13.1 %) and cephalosporins (13 %), particularly newer, broad-spectrum agents. In conclusion, the prevalence level of nosocomial infections (11.2 %) seems quite similar to that of other European countries. Furthermore, aminopenicillins combined with beta-lactamase inhibitors and quinolones appear to be frequently used." @default.
