- W2034191792 abstract "Abstract The growth of Pollicipes polymerus stalk exoskeleton and embedded spicules was studied using radioisotopes to determine sites of greatest mitotic activity, calcification, and organic matrix deposition. 3 H-thymidine, the marker for mitotic activity, concentrates in the growth zone and at the base of the stalk. New stalk is added at the capitulo-peduncular junction, the growth zone, while thickenings and small extensions of stalk are produced at the base of the animal. 45 Ca-incorporation peaks occurred exclusively at the growth zone in a small fraction of the animals studied. New spicules were initiated in the growth zone while additional low-level spicule calcification occurred along the remainder of the stalk. 35 SO 4 incorporation in all animals reflected a small organic component in the matrix composition of the calcite spicules. Feeding experiments were conducted to learn more about a transverse color-band pattern observed in the peduncular exoskeleton. The peduncular cuticle of P. polymerus , unlike the cuticle covering the prosoma, thorax, cirri, and the lining of the mantle cavity, is not shed. Rather, it lengthens at the capitulo-peduncular junction to produce a pattern of bands. The width and color of bands along the stalk vary and may be viewed as a record of conditions present during growth. Spicule size and shape follow a repeating pattern from band to band." @default.
