Reaching a definition that will enable us to make such accurate estimates is part of the aim of this supplementary issue of Neurology .This section of the supplement reviews both sides of the risk factor/TIA issue while focusing on such questions as (a) what the risk of stroke is after a TIA, (b) whether TIA frequency differs in terms of stroke subtype, (c) what we know about the prevalence of TIA from certain study populations, and (d) whether patients with TIA respond differently than stroke patients who have not had TIA to such standard stroke therapies as carotid endarterectomy and antiplatelet agents.In lieu of a standard redefinition of TIA, what do we know about this cerebrovascular event in terms of outcomes? What is the risk for a stroke after a TIA?The annual risk for stroke after a TIA is between 1% and 15%, with a relative risk (RR) ranging between two- and fivefold.
