- W2034236049 abstract "Corneas were examined in the electron microscope at intervals of 1 1/2, 24 and 36 hr after surgical incisions were made on their anterior surface. The epithelium extended partly into the wound by 1 1/2 hr, and by the 24th hr it completely covered the wound surface. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes were noted in the vicinity of the wound at the 24th hr. The majority of these cells, at this time, as well as at the 36th hr, were limited to a plane of the stroma that approximated the depth of the wound. Mitochondria within epithelial cells were observed to increase in number, size and complexity by the 36th hr. After this same time interval, typical connective tissue cells were no longer observed near the wound edges. Farther away from the wound, the nuclei of the connective tissue cells became lobated, and intracellular lipid deposition could be observed. Thirty-six hours postoperatively, the endoplasmic reticulum of some endothelial cells became more extensive. Lobular nuclei and mitochondrial alterations similar to those noted in the epithelium were also observed. The findings thus indicate that, in addition to the invasion of cells into the wound area, marked cytological alterations occur in all layers of the cornea." @default.
