- W2034275870 abstract "Abstract Americans value ‘independence’ and ‘dependence’ as cultural norms, but find them difficult to reconcile because their competing normative demands pull in opposite directions. There are a variety of responses to the dialectic thus generated. One is by allocating the values of independence and dependence to men and women respectively, then by essentialising them as inherent dispositions which psychiatric categories ostensibly name but do not create. Thus the ‘problem’, which is cultural and historical, is converted into a medical issue, where it is then ‘solved’ through translation into psychiatric categories that are assumed to be objectively real and natural. Psychiatry as a knowledge system represents a cultural dialectic motivated by a problematic opposition, or paradox, which cannot be resolved—and must not be, in order for the cultural dialectic to continue to be motivating. If culture is made up of problems that cannot be solved, it is argued, then a very different analytic approach is called for, one which comprehends the dynamic potential of culturally constituted paradox." @default.
