- W2034283445 abstract "The purpose of this study was to determine local blood flow during unilateral leg extension in working and non-working muscles as well as in splanchna. Eight healthy males (27-35 yrs.) performed right leg extensions for ten minutes, one contraction every 6 sec at 7.5(low) and 45.0(high) watts. Blood flow on the right femoral artery (BFwork), the femoral artery(BFnon-work) and the abdominal aorta (BFAo) before celiac artery bifurcation was measured using Doppler ultrasound (HP Inc.) at the beginning of exercise (Ex1), during exercise (Ex2) and immediately before the end (Ex3) of exercise. Splanchnic blood flow (BFSP) was calculated by subtracting BFAo from bilateral leg flow (BFwork+BFnon-work). Changes in blood flow from the resting level was defined as ΔBF. Oxygen uptake(VO2) was measured by expiratory gas analysis. BFAo, BFwork, and BFSP at low intensity was 4.8, 2.2, and 1.9 L/min at Ex1 and 4.2, 2.0, and 1.5 L/min at Ex3. At high intensity, BFAo, BFwork, and BFSP was 4.0, 2.7, and 0.9 L/min at Ex1 and 4.8, 2.8, and 1.4 L/min at Ex3. At each intensity in Ex1 and Ex3, the ratio ofΔ BFSP to Δ BFwork (BFratio) was also calculated. In Ex1, BFratio remained constant during increasing intensity at 42.0% for low intensity and 57.3% for high intensity. However, in Ex3, the BFratio decreased with a rise in intensity from 74.3 to 28.3%. These results indicate that decreased BFSP played a major role in increased BFwork at the start and end of exercise at low intensity and at the start of exercise at high intensity, while increased BFAo played a major role at the end of exercise at high intensity." @default.
