The question arises, however, whether these are separate phenomena or whether they are dynamically interrelated and mutually sustaining components of a single psychosocial process. The latter view has received considerable support from clinical evidence. Thus, the fact that, in many mental health settings, identity and value problems are reported in tandem gives credence to the idea that values shape and are shaped by one's perception of self. Therefore, it seems appropriate to consider both phenomena as reflections of identity problems in contemporary society. In 1950, Erik Erikson wrote: We begin to conceptualize matters of identity at the very time in history when they become a problem. . . . The study of identity, then, becomes as strategic in our time as the study of sexuality was in Freud's time.1 Since that passage was written, theorists?including Erikson himself?have developed this theme and sought to use concepts of identity to clarify the etiology and treatment of problems as diverse as juvenile delinquency, interracial conflict, and physical disability.
