White, Marvin L. Abstract The mechanism is as follows: magnetic loops formed in spot groups ascend into the chromosphere to help form flocculi. These flocculi (magnetic clouds) caught in a solar- wide circulation pattern drift poleward. The clouds (drifting poleward) orient themselves so as to cancel out the existing poloidal field (polar plumes) as the magnetic lines of force slowly diffuse out of the clouds. As these clouds contain a 50-G field, they overcompensate, and a new poloidal field is formed in the reverse direction. The solar poles are cooler than the equator, since the Benard convection cells are suppressed by rotation (j ust as they are by the magnetic field in the umbra and penumbra). So-called Rossy wave patterns are set up resulting in nonaxially symmetric rotation and jet streams. This is just what occurs in the earth's atmosphere and in dishpan experiments. The active regions correspond to these j et streams which are also the seat of the toroidal magnetic field. These jet streams are responsible for the equatorial acceleration and for the amplification of the toroidal field in each hemisphere. When the toroidal fields have been sufficiently amplified, magnetic forces produce an equatorial drift of the active zones. Another mechanism: the sun (corona included) acts as a cosmical centrifuge producing electronic space charges (108 V). The above mechanisms will help explain qualitatively a partial listing of 35 other solar phenomena including (1) M regions, (2) the shapes of the corona, (3) a complete history for the solar magnetic and sunspot cycles, (4) the formation of jet and loop prominences and flares, (5) magnetic monopoles in the photosphere, (6) the continual flow of prominence material downward from a chromospheric source, and (7) the morphology of the solar wind.
