- W2034308508 abstract "The statistical density matrices are constructed in a semiclassical approximation based on the Wigner transformation of statistical mechanics. The Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution is separable in the momentum and coordinate variables of the electron, and provides an especially convenient basis for the construction of density matrices. The resulting matrices are compact and may readily be applied to evaluate the observables of a many-electron system, but require several adjustments, including the quantum regularization that fixes the anomaly caused by the Coulomb singularity, and the effects of nonlinear Debye shielding, charge neutrality and electron–electron correlation. For a plasma of electrons and ions, the electron density near the central ion is enhanced appreciably as the plasma coupling increases. To incorporate this increase in the atomic reaction rates that are used in modelling a moderately coupled plasma, a new form of statistical density kernels is derived in the semiclassical approximation. The momentum integration of the kernel recovers the density matrix. A model for the density enhancement proposed recently may be tested for its reliability by the application of the density kernel." @default.
