- W2034337134 abstract "Introduction: Constipation affects almost 1 in every 6 children over their childhood years and comprises approximately one quarter of Paediatric Gastroenterology outpatient visits. Despite the frequent occurrence of constipation in childhood, it is poorly understood and the exact pathogenesis remains unclear. Suggested risk factors for the development of constipation in childhood include insufficient fluid intake1 and inadequate dietary fibre intake2–3. Methods: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that dietary intake, particularly fibre intake, is associated with functional constipation in children. A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire assessed the habitual intakes of 25 constipated children and 35 controls aged 5–13 years. Functional constipation was defined as delay or difficulty in defecation, present for two or more weeks, in the absence of any underlying organic disorder. FoodWorks Nutrition Software version 2.10 was used for dietary analysis. Results: The two groups were of similar age, gender, weight and height. Constipated children consumed significantly lower intakes of both fibre (p=0.049:t test) and fluids (p=0.016) compared with controls (Table 1).Table 1: Comparison of constipated and control childrenConclusion: Lack of both fibre and fluid intakes are contributing factors to functional constipation in children. Optimisation of these dietary components may help to prevent this common problem." @default.
