- W2034339006 abstract "Although the theme of this article is nuclear power--option or imperative, of course, nuclear power is unlikely to ever be an imperative in the literal sense. It is, rather, a question of responsible choice--good energy choice or bad, sensible policy option or not. Put in straightforward terms, as the 21st century approaches, the choice of nuclear power, particularly in the industrializing world, is becoming increasingly compelling. The population of the industrialized world is today about 1.2 billion people--a figure that is projected to remain roughly constant over the next half century. The demand for electricity will be particularly acute. The obvious question is, where will that additional energy supply come from? Clearly, coal, oil, and gas will remain the first choices. For many countries, coal, oil, and gas remain, in relative terms, accessible; they can be easily integrated into growing economies; and up-front costs are generally lower than the alternatives, even if that may not be the case over the long term. The use of hydro-electric power will continue to grow, but the potential is limited by straightforward considerations of availability. Finally, renewable sources, namely, solar, wind, biomass, etc., are likely to continue to develop, but their overall contribution willmore » almost certainly continue to be small. Their limits of growth are established by the inherent limitations of the technology in relation to the laws of nature. Thus, in the author`s view, nuclear power will play an increasing role. The logic is clear.« less" @default.
