- W2034342192 abstract "Abstract 1. 1. Water loss, plasma Na + and K + and urine Na + and K + were measured in Gopherus polyphemus during a period of water availability and a period of water deprivation in the laboratory. 2. 2. Fecal water loss is negligible, urinary water loss is greatly reduced and together these avenues constitute 18% of the total weight loss during dehydration. 3. 3. Other avenues of water loss (cutaneous and respiratory) have a mean value of 1.07 ± 0.4 g ·100 g −1 ·day −1 that is 2–3 times greater values reported for G. agassizii. 4. 4. Plasma K + is the only ion measured that shows an increase during dehydration. This supports previous conjectures that the disposal of K + is the limiting factor on the ability of terrestrial turtles to withstand desiccation." @default.
