- W2034375206 abstract "Larvae of Tenebrio molitor L., Gembloux strain, race F, having an average initial weight of 10 mg were reared for 4 weeks at 27 ± 0.25°C and 65 ± 5 % relative humidity on diets containing 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 or 20 % of protein or amino acids. The dietary nitrogen was provided by a mixture of synthetic amino acids resembling the composition of larval tissues or by a mixture consisting of 90 parts of ground whole wheat + 10 parts of brewer's yeast. Maximum response to dietary protein was generally obtained by feeding diets containing 10 % of amino acids or 20 % of protein to larvae. The largest response obtained with larvae fed the amino acid mixture was equivalent to that with larvae fed wheat + brewer's yeast diets containing 3 % of protein. The sigmoidal growth response curve for larvae indicated that 3 % of dietary protein should be used for biological evaluation of protein quality. However, in determining the amino acid requirements of T. molitor larvae, a level of 10 % of amino acids in the diet would be required to observe maximal growth responses. Although the present study was based on thirty larvae per treatment, randomly selected subpopulations demonstrated that the same results could have been obtained with fifteen larvae. Highly significant correlations between weight gain and weight of dry matter of larvae and between weight gain and weight of larval protein (r = 0.99) suggest that the experimental procedure could be simplified, particularly if this type of feeding trial were to be used as a screening tool." @default.
