- W2034387645 abstract "On the basis of some of the recent statistical data and results of fisheries research, the overall situation of the Mediterranean fisheries is described and possibilities for future development are indicated. Fish catches and fisheries are analyzed as to fish groups, areas and countries. Future development is in prospect in small pelagic fisheries, particularly for anchovy and pilchard, and in mariculture for molluscs, shrimps and some fish species (mainly Anguilla, Mugil spp., Morone labrax L. and Sparus auratus L.). The general trend in the Mediterranean fisheries is towards moderate increase in the southern Mediterranean and Adriatic, while considerable increase is expected in the Black Sea super-area. Demersal fish stocks seem to be optimally fished or slightly overexploited in the northern parts of the western and central super-area, while there is still room for future development of trawl fisheries in the southern Mediterranean. Because of the recent extension of fishery rights of coastal states, a new trend in international cooperation in the exploitation of marine living resources is expected. There is a strong tendency towards the import of fish commodities, which is at present relatively high. Italy, the leading importer, is at the same time also the leading Mediterranean nation in fish catch. There is a need for more coordinated fisheries research, particularly in pelagic stock assessment as well as in management of the available resources." @default.
