- W2034404764 abstract "The practical principles and limitations of pseudostate testing using the second Born approximation are discussed and the concept of 'effective completeness' is clarified. Two pseudostate sets used in recent work by van Wyngaarden and Walters (1986) are tested against the exact second Born numbers of Ermolaev and Walters for the 1s to 2s transition at 54.4 eV; both sets perform relatively well. It is shown that two stages of approximation are involved in the usual pseudostate representation of the second Born term. The first is the 'effective completeness' assumption; the second is an approximation to matrix elements of the inverse operator (E-H0+ i eta )-1 between pseudostates. From a practical viewpoint it is feasible to eliminate the latter approximation. It is demonstrated that this involves the replacement of the propagator in the second Born term by a (non-diagonal) energy-averaged propagator, the averaging being over the pseudostate energy distribution functions. Extension of this idea to close-coupled pseudostate equations leads to a suggestion that may cure the pseudoresonance problem in a natural way." @default.
