- W2034459844 abstract "This article explores the concept of anti-humanism that emerges in modernist texts, particularly the works of T.E. Hulme and W.B. Yeats. While acknowledging the work of earlier scholarship connecting a certain strain of British modernism to traits associated with anti-humanism, I argue that anti-humanism was actually co-emergent with modernism, rather than being a poststructuralist terminology that can only anachronistically be brought to bear on modernist texts. I look first at the philosophical essays of T.E. Hulme to establish a British modernist context for anti-humanist ideas, and then I look at the essay “Swedenborg, Mediums, and the Desolate Places” by Yeats in order to show how the raw critical form associated with the anti-humanism of both Hulme and later anti-humanist philosophers evolves into a mode that favors alterity and transformation. I address the implications of this evolution for modernist studies and our current moment." @default.
