- W2034506855 abstract "work, which is not as well known as it deserves to be, contains a mine of information concerning Bartram's numerous correspondents... This remark Dandy in a book which is itself a mine of information (The Sloane herbarium, 1958, p. 88) may well have induced editor and publisher of series Classica botanica americana to include Darlington's Memorials in that series. It is, in fact, first volume to appear in what seems to be a very promising new development in publication of facsimile reprints, a series of American botanical classics, introduced and edited Joe Ewan and published Hafner. Darlington's Memorials of John Bartram and Humphry Marshall is one of most important source-books for early American botanical history. The book centers around Bartram and his correspondents and as such it is a primary source of Bartram lore, especially since only a small portion of original Bartram manuscripts seems to have been preserved. There is surely no need to recall here importance of John Bartram for American botany. The personality and pursuits of this amiable and modest but tenacious pioneer have been subject of many publications, e.g. special issue of Bartonia (1931) on occasion of two-hundredth anniversary of founding of Bartram's botanic garden. The memorials contain a reprint of William Bartram's biographical note of his father and a most amusingly precise account of a visit paid in 1796 to John Bartam a travelling 'Russian gentleman,' Ivan Alexiowitz, whose identity remains unknown. However, by whomsoever written, says Darlington, the fidelity of portraiture therein sketched will not be questioned anyone having slightest knowledge of history, character, and pursuits of John Bartram. A detailed chronology of John Bartram is added Ewan in his introduction to present edition of Memorials. William Darlington (1782-1863) was a Pennsylvania physician with a profound side interest in botany and botanists. He succeeded in obtaining from relatives correspondence of John Bartram and Humphry Marshall, as well as necessary permission for publication. A fortunate circumstance was that John Bartram had been in habit of retaining original rough drafts of his letters. In this way published correspondence shows Bartram not only in mirror of letters addressed to him his friends, but also, and more directly, in his own writings. It should be realized, however, that Darlington took great liberties when publishing correspondence. He left out passages which he tought to be of minor interest, or whole letters altogether; he also amended texts considerably, for instance 'correcting' Bartram's rather quaint orthography. In 1849 need for 'diplomatic' transcripts of texts like these was not at all understood, and Darlington made it his first task to produce an (eminently) readable book." @default.
