- W2034509497 abstract "The point of this nonsense is clear enough. For some years nuclear physics has been under attack from particle physicists who have insisted that explicit quarks (and ghions) represent the only acceptable framework for the description of baryons, and the host of phenomena that comprise nuclear and intermediate energy physics. While it has been useful to consider such models, the fact of the matter is that the language of ~nucleons and mesons has repeatedly and overwhelmingly demonstrated itself to be a natural (i.e., economical) language for the description of such phenomena. It is, thus, at least as important to understand how -and with what limitations -our traditional language can he made consistent with QCD. With this goal in mind, the Skyrme effective Lagrangian and the resultant Skyrmion become useful and interesting tools. It has previously been demonstrated that Skyrmions can provide a great deal of qualitative insight regarding the connection between conventional and QCD-based models of low-energy phenomena. I shall briefly touch on this work both to set the stage and to emphasize some of the limitations of the Skyrme model. My primary concern, however, is the application of this model to the problem of dense matter (i.e., nuclear or neutron matter). I hope to convince you that the Skyrme model is particularly well-suited to this task and offers a richness of phenomena which goes beyond that of conventional nuclear physics models. I" @default.
