- W2034520912 abstract "Abstract The Zeeman effect is even more important in the term analysis of complex spectra than in the analysis of simpler spectra, both in the empirical analysis and in the interpretation of the levels. It is shown that a spectrum containing many thousands of lines cannot be organized into a transition array from wavelengths alone, but Zeeman data are a very great help. The use of coupling schemes as guides in the identification of levels is illustrated and compared with more exact calculations fitting levels and g -values to Slater parameters. Experience indicates that it is advantageous for the analysis and the calculations to proceed concurrently, using the observed positions of the levels and the ordering of the J - and g -values to revise the parameters, and using the calculations as a guide in the search for further levels. Because of the great number of levels and the similarity of the g -values, however, it appears doubtful that present techniques can provide a reasonably complete interpretation of very complex spectra." @default.
