The use of video-laryngoscopes replaces fiber optic intubation. It is associated with a high success rate and following failed intubation with a McIntosh blade and consequently could be considered as the gold standard for rescue intubation except when facial mask ventilation is difficult. Fiber optic intubation is still useful in some patients with ENT or maxillo-facial surgery but it is not always successful in this setting and the assistance of an ENT surgeon is required in the more difficult cases. Fiber optic intubation should be mastered by anesthesiologists although it is less commonly used, and the risk of loss of experience of the anaesthetic staffs should be considered." @default.
