Recently, the Justification for the Use of Statins in Primary Prevention: an Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin (JUPITER) randomized 17 802 apparently healthy individuals, with levels of LDL cholesterol below current treatment thresholds but with elevated levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, to rosuvastatin 20 mg daily, or placebo. At a median follow-up of almost 2 years, compared to placebo, rosuvastatin treatment was associated with a significant reduction in the incidence of major cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events, that is, almost twice the magnitude found in previous statin trials.
