- W2034654597 abstract "Survey courses in American history can quickly become stale for both teach ers and students. Since the basic con tent of American history changes slowly and is almost static, many teachers pre sent the same material in the same order year in and year out. While some vari ety is possible, many teachers fall into ruts that can result in uninspiring and boring classes for both teachers and students. A solution to this dilemma is to change the course organization from a chronological approach to a topical one. After eleven years of teaching, I have developed a topical approach to 19th century American history that re volves around four main ideas: Reform, Expansion, Revolution, and the Presi dency. This approach provides for a fresh way to arrange the content of a semester course in American history. By organizing American history around topics, teachers can develop a theme through an era or epoch. For example, they do not have to teach the compact theory of government only during the Adams' administration and then drop it until it resurfaces again during Jackson's presidency. Rather, they can trace it from Thomas Jefferson to John C. Calhoun to Jefferson Davis. Further, this is a means of implementing some of Jerome Bruner's ideas about establishing a structural framework upon which to hang information and data. It also is consistent with inquiry-oriented pro grams that emphasize the teaching of concepts rather than unrelated sets of facts. In addition, the topical approach helps students see relationships between historical periods. The ideas and events of American expansion do not have to stop when the nation temporarily ceases to expand. The class can inves tigate all periods of expansion as a unit and see how one acquisition set the stage for the next imperialistic adventure. On a more practical level, the topi cal approach helps the teacher provide variety in organizing facts and acquir ing teaching materials. It also allows a teacher greater access to audio-visual materials and supplementary print items. Finally, the topical approach allows for full course coverage. If properly planned, the approach deals with all the major events, concepts, and personali ties of the 19th century. Below, I would like to explore briefly four topics and show how they could be useful in a 19th century history classroom. To begin a five-week unit on reform," @default.
