- W2034667935 abstract "Oxidation of polyethylene and polypropylene containing high concentrations of CaCO3 was studied in the temperature range 280–400°C. Two types of CaCO3, differing in their transition metal contents, were employed. Thermogravimetric measurements showed that the rate of weight loss of polymer increased with the transition metal content in the filler. Incandescence appears at 340°C after an induction period of c. 15 min. During this period the color of the polymer turns brown and then black, while ductile fracture is preserved as demonstrated by SEM measurements of fracture faces. The polyene structures with a low level of triplet energy thus formed may function as photosensitizers of the actual oxidation reaction. It has been shown that at temperatures above 320°C the radiation energy is high enough for photocatalytic generation of singlet oxygen or for the formation of a triplet state of the polyene. A reaction mechanism for the formation of hydroperoxides via photocatalytic insertion of dioxygen into the CH bond and subsequent degradation reactions has been proposed." @default.
