- W2034695800 abstract "Focusing on four cases presented by Lloyd Wells, M.D., this paperaddresses the relationship of clinical psychopathology to thephilosophical concept of narrative identity. The paper begins with areview of the debate among historians, literary critics, and philosophersover the referential status of narrative identity, that is, whetherthe narrative self is a fictive structure unrelated to lived life orwhether ordinary life is in fact lived narratively. Agreeing with thosephilosophers who argue for the reference of narrative identity to actuallife, the author analyzes the four cases from the perspective of narrativeidentity to determine what light this philosophical concept sheds on thevarious psychopathologies. Then, having used the philosophical conceptto illuminate psychopathology, he reverses direction and questions whatpsychopathology has to offer philosophy and its notion of narrativeidentity. The author argues both that the philosophical concept ofnarrative identity contributes to our understanding of psychopathologyand that psychopathology offers challenges to the philosophical notionof narrative identity." @default.
