- W2034700767 abstract "In clinical practice, alterations in body iron status can be pragmatically assessed by determinations of plasma iron, transferrin and ferritin levels [ 11. Complementing these measurements particularly in individuals with iron overload are chelation studies such as the desferrioxamine-induced urinary iron excretion [2,3] and estimation of hepatic tissue iron, necessitating percutaneous liver biopsy with its attendent risks for morbidity [4]. Potentially less invasive means for indirectly assessing tissue iron content include the intracellular ferritin concentrations of peripheral blood cells. Using elaborate, time-consuming cell separation techniques and the splenic ferritin radioimmunoassay it has been demonstrated that ferritin can be reproducibly measured in mature normal erythrocytes [5]. To explore the clinical potential of this measurement we have developed a rapid and simple method for its estimation which utilizes a hepatic ferritin radioimmunoassay." @default.
