- W2034803024 abstract "The life cycle of H. hegeneri (Hyland, 1956) has been completed in the laboratory, using eggs of the collembolan, Sinella curviseta, as food for the nymphal and adult forms. Average time required for the mites to complete their life cycle was calculated to be 85 days. Unengorged larvae from laboratory cultures were used to infest experimentally amphibians, particularly Rana pipiens sphenocephala and R. palustris. The relationships which exist between larva and host have been divided for convenience into six phases: (1) selection of site, (2) entering the integument, (3) reaching the final position in the integument, (4) encapsulation, (5) engorgement, and (6) escape. After the site for penetration has been chosen and the chelicerae have been inserted the mite gradually moves into the host and comes to lie within the loose connective tissue of the dermis. A local reaction is produced and the surrounding tissue becomes reorganized and an envelope of connective tissue forms around the mite. Engorgement takes place over a period of time estimated to be from 2 to 3 weeks. After engorgement the larvae may remain associated with the host for an additional period of time with the result that the total parasitic phase may last as long as 6 months or more. By means which are principally mechanical the larvae are able to emerge from the living or dead hosts to complete the nonparasitic phase of the life cycle. The relationship which exists here between host and encapsulated parasite is much more intricate than that in which the parasite remains external to the host or simply invades an orifice. Although it is known that the larvae of Hannemania may engorge to repletion without passing into the integument this method is apparently uncommon and is not considered to be the one normally employed." @default.
