- W2034862468 abstract "The examination of the intentions to use condoms by a sample of 16-20 year olds in Swindon (Wiltshire) and East Dorset England supports the hypothesis that perceived control in sexual matters (over partner choice and condom use) is a useful predictor of intended use of condoms by virgins. This preliminary sample reflects 4 school year defined cohorts randomly selected from Authority listings of state schools. The postal questionnaire return rate was low but within the middle of ranges reported for other like studies. The returns yielded 2171 individuals of which 240 males and 331 females fulfilled the requirements of being virgins and completing all the questions. Some of the questions included concern about catching AIDS/HIV; self-appraisal of level of assertiveness and risk-taking; perceived control over the choice of a safe sex partner and someone trustworthy; and condom use. An important outcome variable was how certain individuals were of using condoms in different situations. The results indicated that females had greater intentions of using condoms than males (means for females (F)= 18.37 males (M) - 17.00). There were no differences expressed in concern about AIDS. Females also felt greater control over choice of safe partner (F=11.38 M=10.70) and condom use (F=8.22 M-7.78). Increases in age yielded less worry about AIDS and low confidence in sexual relations. A path analysis was conducted to overcome problems with intercorrelations of the predictor variables (sex cohort assertiveness risk-taking worry about AIDS expectations of personal control and confidence in sex relations. 16% of the variance is explained by the predictor variables. The 2 indices of perceived control over sex relations are positively associated with intent to use. Risk-taking predicts intentions but those willing to take risks are less likely to use condoms. Assertiveness and confidence in sex relations had no direct effect on intentions. Worry about AIDS is related to greater likelihood of intentions. Weak relationships are reported in low standardized regression weights. The model was tested separately by sex. Both sexes had paths linking control variables with intentions and the previously mentioned risk-taking behavior relationship. For males AIDS was a reason to remain a virgin. Worry about AIDS was related to female intentions. However confidence in the model is low because of the low beta weights and high intervariable correlations. In applying the findings to sex education educators need to correct assumptions and consider that young women feel more sexual control. However circumstances may yet determine condom use. Further study will examine the relationship of these intentions to behavior." @default.
