- W2034895902 abstract "The menace of indiscriminate use of antibiotics is growing at an alarming pace, thus creating more problems than the solutions it offers. Our study aimed to evaluate the need for antibiotic prophylaxis in minor oral surgeries and we chose third molar surgeries as a representative study model. One hundred eighty-one consecutive patients reporting to our department who met pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the study. The patients were randomly divided into three groups: Group 1: Placebo, Group 2: Amoxycillin 1 g orally 1 h before surgery, and Group 3: Metronidazole 800 mg orally 1 h before surgery. The patients were assessed for surgical wound infection (SWI) based on established guidelines by an examiner blinded to drug allotment and surgical procedure. Following exclusion of cases lost to follow-up, 167 patients were included in the final analysis. Six patients were diagnosed with SWI during follow-up examination. No statistically significant difference in infection rates were noted between any of the three groups (p < 0.05). This triple-blinded trial, considered one of the highest levels of scientific evidence, shows no evidence of any advantage with routine use of prophylactic antibiotics in third molar and other minor oral surgical procedures." @default.
