- W2034900404 abstract "Over a period of six years observations have been made of the Foraminifera in the brackish waters of the Golf de Fos at the mouth of the Rhŏne in Southern France, and the effect which the degree of salinity and the nature of the sediment have on these. In this area, the salinity varies from place to place, and also from time to time. The rarer arenaceous Foraminifera proved to be especially susceptible to environmental conditions and were studied more intensively than the others. Some, e.g. Miliammina showed great tolerance of variations in salinity and were found everywhere, whereas others, such as Trochammina, ‘avoid’ both areas of predominantly fresh water, and also those where euhaline influence predominates. On the other hand, genera such as Ammobaculites and Haplophragmoides are to be found in conditions ranging from pliohaline brackish water to euhaline sea water in which temporary variations of salinity occur. Of the calcareous Foraminifera, the Milioloidae avoid the predominantly freshwater areas, whereas Ammonia, Nonion, and Elphidium are to be found everywhere in varying proportions. Other species, e.g. Cibicides and Discorbis, are only found singly, and appear to be occasional intruders from marine areas. @default.
